Windy City Reviews has just reviewed Kim Strickland's novel "Down at the Golden Coin", which came out on Eckhartz Press last year.
Here's an excerpt...
"Strickland beautifully weaves a story that shows the ability we have to change our lives and ultimately find that elusive happiness. She brings together powerful words and concepts of self-responsibility, passion, faith in oneself and universal experiences to demonstrate how we can write our own happy ending."
Of course, "Down at the Golden Coin" is available at Eckhartz Press.
A blog dedicated to the comings and goings, news and reviews, and literary mutterings and ruminations of our talented Eckhartz Press authors.

Some Love for "Down at the Golden Coin"
Eckhartz Press author Kim Strickland gets some love from across the pond, a British book review site had this to say about "Down at the Golden Coin"...
This book is funny, serious, enlightening, and thought provoking. It is a story told of a young woman who is struggling with numerous problems in her life, and who meets her messiah Violet, with blue streaked hair and a nose stud, at just the right moment in a launderette.
It is easy to relate to the main character Annie, who has heard all the self help, spiritual guidance stuff before, read ‘The Secret’, and lots more, and still her life is falling to bits. She is taken through some past life experiences and even jumps ahead to a possible future for a while, which eventually starts to make sense to her about what she has to learn about positive thought and all kinds of forgiveness.
The book is written in a simple straight forward style and is a very comfortable read, albeit, with hints of telepathy and small miracles. There is a small cast of characters in the story but everyone is well drawn and is essential. There are some laugh out loud one liners, i.e. when Xavier’s dad asks to borrow some fabric softener, Annie thinks-
‘If I’d overheard what we were talking about, I’d have turned around and walked away. Taken my chances with static cling.’ Very funny in context.
The ending of the book is a nice twist and leaves you with a satisfied feeling and a smile on your face. If this book doesn’t change your life for the future it might just make you think carefully about how to deal more positively with the present.

Some love for "Down at the Golden Coin"
The blog Chick Lit Plus reviewed "Down at the Golden Coin" and gave it four stars.
You can read the entire review at Chick Lit Plus, but here's an excerpt...
"Down at The Golden Coin by Kim Strickland was not at all what I expected when I first started reading it. In my opinion, the name gives it quite the spin and I can’t help but to think of it being about an adventure of some type. Well, don’t be fooled like me … this book is more along the lines of a self-help book and about improving your overall outlook on life. Now, don’t run away just yet. It isn’t your typical self help book- this book is filled with wit and humor and it makes you really ponder the life that you are living. Kim does a fabulous job of making you think and making you see things in a different light. Overall, a great read and I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a little pick me up."

The BAC Book Club with Kim Strickland

Moderator Penny Golden will be talking to Kim about "Down at the Golden Coin" and Kim will take questions from the audience and sign books.
The BAC is promoting it as a "no pressure" book club, where the attendees don't have to have read the book. It will be an informal setting, with a cash bar and snacks; a fun "girls' night out" kind of evening. (Guys are welcome too, of course!).
The fun begins at 7:30. See you there!

Eckhartz Press Night at The Chicago Way
Eckhartz Press is really looking forward to this Sunday night, June 3rd.
The literary series "The Chicago Way" (at the Hidden Shamrock, 2723 N. Halsted, from 7-8:30pm) is having a special Eckhartz Press night! It will be the official book launch of Randy Richardson's new book "Cheeseland", but the entire Eckhartz Press stable will be on hand. Brendan and Rick will do a reading from "The Living Wills". Kim Strickland will do a reading from "Down at the Golden Coin", and then Randy will do a reading from "Cheeseland." Then we'll have a Q&A session, moderated by one of the Chicago Way founders, Mary Beth Hoerner.
All three books will be available for purchase, and naturally, the authors will happily sign them for you.
Have we mentioned that The Hidden Shamrock is a bar? That's really the Chicago Way, isn't it?

Book Club Discussion Questions
We've been busy beavers at Eckhartz Press readying our next book for publication ("Cheeseland" by Randy Richardson), but we're also in the midst of putting together "book club packages". Look for more details about that in the coming weeks.
Until those are ready for release, however, we've been asked by fans of our first two books to put together some discussion questions for book clubs. We know there are several book clubs currently reading both "The Living Wills" and "Down at the Golden Coin". Hopefully these questions prepared by our authors will spur discussion and debate.
THE LIVING WILLS
1) The Living Wills is a very "Chicago" book. Does the location add/subtract to your enjoyment of the story?
2) The three story lines all eventually intersect. Did it throw you off before the story lines came together?
3) Were you surprised by the way any of these story lines intersected with each other?
4) Which of the three story lines did you relate to the most, and why?
5) How does Peter's journey to find the video parallel the reader's journey to understanding Henry?
6) How does the funeral at the beginning of the novel differ from the funeral at the end of the novel?
7) What role does spirituality play in the plot? Is that something you can relate to?
8) How does the comic element serve to balance the dramatic element of the story?
9) How does the theme of "everything is connected" reveal itself in the plot as well as in the actual structure of the novel?
10) What events in your own lives have happened in "two seconds" and changed everything?
DOWN AT THE GOLDEN COIN
1) How do you think you would react if you met someone claiming to be God at the laundromat, or anywhere else for that matter? Would you believe right away or would you, like Annie, demand a lot of proof? Is this something you would like to have happen, or would you prefer to never meet a Messiah in person?
2) Do you think Violet is who she says she is? Why do you think the author chose to have her be so young? Female? Pierced and tatted?
3) Why do you think Violet makes Annie go through all the “work” to come to her realizations and epiphanies, as opposed to just doing what Annie refers to as using her “little Messiah magic tricks?”
4) If you suspected your spouse was having an affair, would you, like Annie, choose to ignore the elephant in the room or would you initiate a confrontation right away? Do you think Annie and Jack’s marriage will survive his infidelity? Why or why not?
5) Have you ever learned something from your children that made you feel like the parenting tables had been turned? Have you ever found out your children knew a secret you’d thought you’d successfully kept from them?
6) Do you think God, (or a Higher Force or your Soul or whatever you want to call it) communicates with you? Do you have any examples from your own life?
7) Symbolism is prevalent throughout the story. Give some examples and describe what you think they mean.
8) Do you live in the moment, the Now, or do your find yourself, like Annie, worrying about the future or dwelling in the past?
9) The author draws on her belief that we all create our own realities. Do you think you have the ability to create your own reality? Do you have any examples from your own life that demonstrate this ability to be true or not true? Did you read The Secret and try its techniques? If so, what were your results and why do you believe you were successful or not successful?
10) How do you think the “Great Recession” has impacted how we as a society view wealth and money? Has it changed your personal view? Annie is a pretty materialistic person. How do you think she’ll do going forward with her new “enough is enough” philosophy?

Viral City Mom
Kim Strickland's City Mom blog post yesterday (a diatribe about Publisher's Weekly) struck a nerve, judging by the many tweets and retweets, and likes on Facebook.
Read it here.
Yes, that is the same Kim Strickland that penned the Eckhartz Press classic "Down at the Golden Coin". Where is that available again? Oh that's right: Here

E-books in the news
At Eckhartz Press headquarters this morning, we were happy to read about this little development in the e-book world: Barnes & Noble lights up e-readers.
Here's the highlight: "E-readers with black-and-white screens, made by Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Sony and others, are easily readable in bright light but don't come with their own light sources and can't be read in darkness. The ones with color screens, such as the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, do have their own light sources but are barely legible in sunlight. The new "Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight" has a standard black-and-white screen, but an array of light-emitting diodes inside the frame spreads a glow over the page with the help of an invisible light-guiding layer. The ability to read books in bed without disturbing a partner by turning on a bedside lamp has been a top request from customers, said Jamie Ianonne, the head of Barnes & Noble's digital division. The model will be in stores early next month and cost $139."
Have we ever mentioned, by the way, that "The Living Wills" is available as an e-book? It's true. When you get your new "lit up" Nook, you can get "The Living Wills" at Barnes & Noble (where it's got a 5 star rating). It's also, of course, available for your Kindle at amazon (where it has a 4.8 star rating), and for your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch at the Apple Bookstore, and even for your Sony e-reader at the Sony Reader Store. It's selling quite well, so we thank you for your support!
Coming soon to all of those places: the "Down at the Golden Coin" e-book.
